Bulk grain hoppers were developed to transport imported grain. The first bulk grain hoppers were constructed of wood and open topped with the provision for a tarpaulin to keep the grain dry. However, as the imports of grain grew the design of the hoppers were developed and by nationalisation there was quite a range. BR standardised its bulk grain hoppers based on the all steel LMS design and these saw service right up to the 1970s when road transport took over as the primary method of transportation and grain was transported in sacks on pallets.
The Dapol model of the post nationalised all steel bulk grain hopper features:
Highly detailed body moulding
Profiled wheels
NEM pockets with self centring couplings
Accurately applied livery
Weathered Finish
